Week 2006 06 18

Filed under: swimming training — andy @ 12:42 pm

Another long-ish session in the cooler waters of the 50m outdoor Pavilion pool (see 3rd chart above) on Saturday left Sunday as a recovery day before the new week’s onslaught. I had the pool to myself, as if the City Council had provided this wonderful facility for my exclusive use. To make things even better, at the bottom of my kitbag I discovered a crumpled old receipt for a ticket granting a year’s access to the pool (ZAR 300 or £ 22). What a contrast to the price of organising a single swim at Dover, which will not leave much change from ZAR 75 000 when plane tickets, accommodation, pilot boat etc are all accounted for - no wonder South Africans all finish the swim!

From next week I plan to

  • add a 2nd long weekend swim
  • take Friday & Monday as light or rest days
  • join the legendary evening sessions at the Point gym after work
The evening session is populated by former English Channel swimmers, former competitive (national) pool swimmers etc - "a short quality session" as the coach Kevin Fialkov describes it - about 2km in an hour. This is to build up the strength to confront the notorious current at the French coast which has defeated many aspirant English Channel swimmers at the end of a long day in the water.
