Cold & sinus irritations prevented me from doing anything more than keeping ticking over – all this weeks’ sessions were 1.5km sets at a lope – about 16mins 45sec per km.

In retrospect, my struggling to maintain tempo in last weeks’ training sessions was probably the precursor to this weeks’ cold.

Local swimming demi-god (Dion Wooodborne’s label – see quote below) & former 10 hour channel swimmer John Dickerson made one of his sporadic forays into the pool at the beginning of the week to terrorise me ("kom swaer" after the 5th 200m at 2min 30sec). Mileage fell off a bit after that – got to work on the consistency again.

"I had altered my stroke on the long arm extension of Otto Tanning and the roll of the shoulders from John Dickerson, two demi-gods of the swim world, who both have stories of the channel."

Lunch time training commences at Newlands 50m outdoor pool next week – come rain or shine!

The distance will start at 1km and get incrementally longer, while the temperature will get incrementally colder; it’s a moot point where the two will converge, or at what temperature the sessions will start getting shorter again! My idea is to start "joining the dots" between the training sessions, so that the water becomes "home."
